About Lake Winnipesaukee

A place to call home for all four seasons

Lake Winnipesaukee

Less than 2 hours north of Boston, Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in the state of New Hampshire and the 6th largest lake in the United States that lies completely within its boarders. Lake Winnipesaukee is 28 miles long and 15 miles wide (at its widest point). The depth of the lake is, on average, about 60 feet deep, but in an area of the lake called “The Broads”, water depths exceed 200ft.

The Lake also has 278 islands. Some islands are bridged, such as Governor’s Island in Gilford or Black Cat Island in Moultonborough and offer some of the finest real estate on the lake. However, most islands are, expectedly, only accessible by boat.

Surrounded by three mountain ranges, a wooded shoreline and crystal clear water make Lake Winnipesaukee a popular resort destination, particularly among those seeking a safe haven from the summer heat of Boston or New York City.

Lake Winnipesaukee is renowned for its crystal clear water due to the fact that its watershed consists of natural springs, so it is fed pure, filtered water rather than silted runoff from rivers. This beautiful blue water makes for perfect swimming in the summer (water temperatures can reach the mid to high 70’s during July and August. For boating enthusiasts, Lake Winnipesaukee offers an unparalleled opportunity for families to get out on the water and explore the lake’s 72 square mile footprint.

But Lake Winnipesaukee isn’t just a destination in the spring and summer months. In the fall, residents and vacationers alike enjoy sightseeing while watching the leaves change color around the lake. And in the winter, Lake Winnipesaukee freezes over offering an opportunity for snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice skating and ice fishing (and of course, many of the best ski resorts in New England are only a short drive away).
